We started out supporting the local and slow food movement on a small scale when we changed our own lifestyle by purchasing local fresh whole foods. Our food tasted better and we saw the direct impact that small purchases have on our community as it sustains and encourages young farmers and their mentors. After watching one documentary after another about our degrading health stemming from our broken food system, and seeing and tasting first hand what a difference eating local makes, we wanted to do more. We’re not farmers and don’t own a restaurant or local grocery but found a way to participate by partnering with a mill and regional farmers to sell their grains & legumes at a year round indoor farmer’s market in Charlotte, NC. We sell a variety of non GMO heirloom organic grains grown in the Carolinas, Georgia and Texas. We offer everything from toasted oats, course ground grits, and sea island peas, to piccalo farro and aromatic rice. We’re also constantly testing, refining, and creating recipes to guide our customers to sensational seasonal flavors.
The mill and farmers we partner with are certified organic and more importantly are dedicated to sustainable farming practices. Instead of using fertilizers and pesticides, they rely on natural crop rotation and focus on quality versus yield and work tirelessly to revive heirloom seeds for bio diversity. Their efforts are leading the way in improving our local food system and they are networking and sharing with other like minded farmers and seedsmen across the country. Slowly but surely their hard work is making an impact on both the environmental and culinary fronts. Sustainable is better for the planet and your taste buds!
